AI Rivalry Intensifies as Musk Challenges OpenAI’s Newest Model

A burgeoning competition between leading artificial intelligence systems has ignited online discussion, with the phrase “ChatGPT 5 vs. Grok 5” currently trending globally. The surge in interest follows closely on the heels of OpenAI’s recent release of GPT-5 and subsequent claims made by Elon Musk regarding his company’s Grok AI model.
Musk, owner of the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), initially responded to the unveiling of GPT-5 with posts asserting that Grok 4 Heavy possesses superior intelligence. He elaborated in a series of updates, declaring, “Grok 4 Heavy was smarter 2 weeks ago than GPT5 is now and G4H is already a lot better.” Musk further asserted that Grok 4 outperformed GPT-5 on the ARC-AGI benchmark – the Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus for Artificial General Intelligence.
ARC-AGI serves as an evaluation tool designed to assess general intelligence in AI, gauging systems’ capacity for abstract reasoning, problem-solving, and adaptation with limited prior knowledge, according to information from the ARC Prize organization.
Musk has indicated that Grok 5 is slated for release before the end of this year, promising a significantly advanced iteration: “Grok 5 will be out before the end of this year, and it will be crushingly good.” The announcement has fueled debate among X users, with some praising Musk’s contribution to AI development while others highlight differing access models—GPT-5 being offered as a free service compared to Grok’s subscription tiers.
