Boulder Dash Enters Its Fifth Decade with Anniversary Reboot

BBG Entertainment has revived the iconic puzzle game Boulder Dash for its 40th anniversary, launching a comprehensive edition that blends classic gameplay with modern enhancements. The Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary Edition, released on July 24, 2025, is now accessible across PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 4 & 5 platforms.
This definitive release meticulously reimagines the original Boulder Dash trilogy, faithfully recreating sixty levels from the first three installments while adding an additional 180 newly designed stages intended to appeal to both experienced players and those discovering the franchise for the first time. The package also incorporates six entirely new worlds – a portion of which were developed in collaboration with dedicated fans – along with novel gameplay mechanics such as expanding walls, acid-consuming rocks, automated enemy spawners, and unexpected item drops.
Players can personalize their experience by selecting from three distinct characters and leveraging a built-in level editor to design and share custom cave layouts within a global community. The visual presentation has also undergone significant refinement, integrating the original’s aesthetic with contemporary graphical techniques. Returning composer Chris Hülsbeck, known for his contributions to soundtracks such as Turrican and The Giana Sisters, provides a refreshed musical score featuring both remixes of classic themes and entirely new compositions.
Initial previews of the anniversary edition were showcased at gamescom 2025, accompanied by competitive Boulder Dash Master Challenge tournaments in Berlin and Rome. Priced at €19.99 / $19.99, the release marks a significant milestone for the franchise, offering both a respectful nod to its legacy and an innovative approach to strategic puzzle gameplay. The original report was published by GameDaily on August 13, 2025.
