“Have you thought about saving money? It’s not going to work!” Florida Considers $200 Tax on Electric Vehicles

"Have you thought about saving money? It's not going to work!" Florida Considers $200 Tax on Electric Vehicles - readd.org 2024

Interesting news is told by Carscoops: the authorities of Florida (USA) are considering the introduction of an annual tax of $200 (and even with the possibility of further raising to $250) for each electric car. In addition, the introduction of an additional tax on PHEV hybrids is being considered. This is in addition to the already existing conventional car taxes in the state of Florida.

Why is that? Because Florida has certain programs that are funded by taxes on the sale of fuel. And due to electric cars (or a hybrid with the ability to run on electricity), fuel sales are gradually decreasing. According to officials’ calculations, the drop in fuel tax revenues will be reduced by 20% by 2040.

Accordingly, the introduction of new taxes on electric vehicles should compensate for this reduction. However, it is interesting how this will affect the cost of operating electric vehicles (and their popularity), for which fuel savings have been one of the biggest advantages over conventional cars.
