KEF XIO: A Premium Soundbar Challenging Spatial Audio Standards

The audio equipment manufacturer KEF has entered the competitive market for premium spatial audio soundbars with its new XIO model. While numerous alternatives exist at lower price points, the XIO aims to distinguish itself through innovative design and performance. Initial assessments suggest it’s a compelling option, potentially earning a place among top-rated soundbars for those seeking an all-in-one solution without separate subwoofers or satellite speakers.
The XIO delivers a 5.1.2 channel experience utilizing physical drivers rather than relying solely on digital processing to simulate spatial audio. A key feature involves the arrangement of four P185 low-frequency drivers, paired in a configuration designed to minimize internal vibrations through force cancellation. Six Uni-Q MX drivers, miniature versions of KEF’s established design, incorporate a mechanical crossover allowing independent operation of their dual-diaphragm layout. Three drivers face forward when the soundbar is placed on a shelf; wall mounting reconfigures this setup with three drivers facing upwards and the central driver joining them in a forward-facing array.
KEF has incorporated several technologies to optimize performance, including VECO (velocity control technology), which uses negative feedback to reduce distortion in the low-frequency drivers, and IPT (intelligent placement technology), an auto-calibration tool leveraging integrated microphones for environmental optimization. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.3, dual-band Wi-Fi, a USB socket, digital optical input, and HDMI 2.1 eARC.
A notable limitation is the absence of HDMI passthrough, a feature considered standard in competing premium soundbars, raising questions regarding design choices given the device’s price point. However, the XIO compensates with broad compatibility including Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Sony 360 Reality Audio, and forthcoming support for Airplay Spatial Audio. The accompanying control application also supports popular music streaming services such as Amazon Music, Deezer, Qobuz, Spotify Connect, and Tidal Connect.
Early impressions of the XIO’s audio performance have been overwhelmingly positive, marked by a remarkably expansive soundstage that provides an immersive listening experience with precise directional cues and exceptional detail across all frequencies. The high-resolution output is characterized by both clarity in the higher ranges and a robust, impactful bass response.
