OpenAI Releases Advanced GPT-5 Model for Free ChatGPT Users with Usage Restrictions

OpenAI announced Thursday the general availability of GPT-5, the latest iteration of its large language model powering ChatGPT, in a move aimed at broad accessibility. The update delivers enhanced reasoning and coding capabilities, alongside an adaptive approach where the AI dynamically adjusts its processing based on user prompts—sometimes prioritizing detailed analysis and other times offering quicker responses. GPT-5 maintains compatibility with existing tools such as Deep Research, Agent Mode, and Canvas.
Significantly, GPT-5 is now the default model for all ChatGPT users, encompassing those utilizing the free tier of the service. “GPT-5 is the smartest model we’ve ever done, but the main thing we pushed for is real-world utility and mass accessibility/affordability,” stated Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, on X (formerly Twitter). He indicated that the platform intends to make increasingly sophisticated models available to a global audience exceeding one billion individuals.
While access to GPT-5 is free with a ChatGPT account—requiring user registration—usage is subject to limitations mirroring those applied to prior advanced AI tools. The rollout has begun globally, but initial availability is currently restricted to mobile devices; web and iPad versions of ChatGPT have not yet been updated.
OpenAI detailed specific usage allowances within its support documentation, categorized by subscription tiers: Free, Plus, and Pro/Team. Automatic transitions between GPT-5 and “GPT-5 Thinking” for complex reasoning tasks will occur without impacting weekly message limits. The company also outlined prohibited uses on the Plus and Team subscriptions.
Existing ChatGPT conversations are being automatically migrated to their equivalent GPT-5 versions; chats previously utilizing earlier models (including GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.5, and various mini variants) will transition accordingly. For Pro and Team users, certain conversations will be assigned to the exclusive “GPT-5-Pro” model. Free and Plus tier users will see older models disappear from the selection menu, with legacy access maintained for Enterprise, Team, and Education customers through a dedicated setting.
The new model supports all existing ChatGPT tools including web search, data analysis, image generation, file processing, Canvas functionality, memory capabilities, and custom instructions. OpenAI confirmed that GPT-5 availability will be delayed by one week for users on the Enterprise and Education tiers.
