Unexpected Security Update Released for Samsung Galaxy S20 Series on Verizon

Samsung has released a surprise security patch for users of the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra smartphones connected to Verizon’s network. The unexpected update was reported by SammyGuru earlier this week, with Verizon publishing details outlining its inclusion in a recent software distribution.
The Galaxy S20 series, initially launched in 2020, has experienced a fluctuating support schedule throughout its lifespan. Having transitioned from monthly updates to quarterly releases in March of last year, Samsung began scaling back dedicated support for the aging devices as it prioritized newer models like the Galaxy S24. The handsets had already exhausted their allotment of major Android operating system upgrades, progressing from Android 10 to version 13 in 2022.
Previously, a security patch released in April 2025 was believed to be the final one for the core Galaxy S20 lineup; Samsung’s official security bulletins subsequently removed these devices from their supported list. However, this latest distribution contradicts that assumption, raising speculation whether it represents the conclusive end of software support for the series. The Galaxy S20 FE variant, which received separate update schedules, may also be nearing its final patch with this Q3 2025 release.
