Rumors suggest the upcoming Pixel Watch 4 will incorporate a novel charging system, moving away from the pin-based connector utilized in earlier models. However, initial indications point towards a proprietary side-mounted charger requiring a dedicated docking station rather than standard Qi wireless compatibility. This shift follows signals that Google is integrating Qi2 magnetic charging support into the Pixel 10 smartphone, suggesting an acknowledgment of consumer preference for universal charging standards.

A leaked image released in late July appears to depict the Pixel Watch 4 secured on a rounded charging dock, with slots positioned on its left side intended for mounting purposes. If authentic, this would mark the third iteration of a proprietary charging cable across four generations of Pixel Watches; the original model employed a magnetic connector before transitioning to pins with the second generation.

The persistence of proprietary smartwatch chargers is a recurring frustration for users, often leading to expensive and difficult-to-source replacements when original cables are lost or damaged. The reluctance among manufacturers to embrace Qi charging stems primarily from the space constraints inherent in smartwatch designs; incorporating a wireless charging coil can compromise other crucial features such as battery capacity.

“Smartwatch designs represent a delicate trade-off, and mandated wireless charging could hinder advancements in other areas,” stated Jitesh Ubrani, research manager at IDC. Consequently, it appears unlikely that the Pixel Watch 4 will support Qi or Qi2 chargers, and this trend may continue for the foreseeable future.
